Aggressive Fernandez is getting up to speed

"Fernandez is still trying to establish his game, but Wednesday's 3-1 loss (on three Montreal power-play strikes) was a significant step toward NHL standards. Fernandez was quick in the crease. He recovered after making initial stops."

Click to read more of Fluto Shinzawa's report on this B's net-minder.

Manny Fernandez being Manny a good thing

Stephen Harris has the Boston Herald's version of the Bruins Notebook.

The B's may have lost to the Canadiens last night, but this result is not to overshadow the progress made by Manny Fernandez. Also noted is Zdeno Chara's breakout, and Peter Chiarelli's reaction to reports that center Marc Savard could be traded.

As Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald writes: "Andrew Alberts is hardly the first big, young defenseman to go through some ups and downs during his initial few years in the NHL."

Harris goes on to describe the approach Alberts is taking to this year's season.

Hoping for a high-yield bond

Yesterday I posted a story about the B's taking a trip up to Vermont for some "team bonding" before they go on to Montreal. Fluto Shinzawa has this follow-up:

"Most of the 31 Bruins arrived in Vermont with their precious golf clubs, which they hope to break out at the Country Club of Vermont today. They took part in a ropes course activity yesterday at the Bolton Adventure Center. They signed autographs for fans last night at the Ben & Jerry's Factory, aiming not to ruin their preseason work by sampling spoonfuls of Phish Food."

I wouldn't have minded being taken along for this trip....

Bruins getting act together

As Barbara Matson of the Boston Globe writes, day 13 of the 21 day training camp usually signifies a turn from "auditions" to getting closer to that opening day roster. There's still some paring down to do before the season officially starts, but as the B's head up toward Montreal for their Wednesday exhibition they're stopping off in Vermont to work on some team bonding... just another step toward cohesion.

Julien: "A successful four days."

The Bruins may have lost to the Detroit Red Wings last night, but Claude Julien isn't worried. The bench coach highlights the fact that preseason is more about the fine tuning than racking up wins and looks for the positives in the play of his third and fourth lines in particular.

Tim Thomas is Bruins’ No. 1

The story of Tim Thomas's career with the Boston Bruins one is an interesting one, indeed. As Stephen Harris of the Boston Herald writes, Thomas played for the B's for three seasons as a presumed back up goalie and performed his way to being number one. This season there is no question that Thomas will be starting on the top with a new kind of pressure on his heavily padded shoulders.
